What does a Hairstylist do?

A hairstylist is tasked with creating character hairstyles by styling and maintaining actors’ hair on set during filming. During pre-production, they go through teleplays to develop and test cuts, hair color, and designs. They also prepare and maintain wigs and other hairpieces. Some hairstylists also work as makeup artists.

 

How much does this career make?

According to Ziprecruiter, Hairstylists make a national average of $41,851 or $20.12 an hour (as of March 2022). Entry-level hairstylists make around $27,421 annually, with senior-level hairstylists making $50,455. Of course, this wide range also depends on skill, seniority, company, and location.

Hairstylists provide hairstyles that enhance the look and personality of characters. If the show takes place during a specific time period, they ensure hairstyles portrayed on the show are historically accurate.
